Description: Sturdy but thin laid paper. Serial No. 1174. “Signed” by Peyton Randolph and Ro. C. Nicholas. Printer uncertain. Uniface. 79mm by 63mm. “Possibly a Contemporary Counterfeit of the issue, but not cataloged as such by Mr. Ford,” wrote the Ford cataloger. That writer summarized by saying this may only be a late plate state. Attractive paper, moderately lively inking, strong signatures and serial number. Back with several period inked endorsements. Underbidders on this note take heart -- another example of the issue follows in the very next lot.
