This winsome creamer-size pitcher is made by the Cumbow China Decorating Company of Abingdon, Virginia. It is 1950s vintage.

Established by Mabel and Jacob Ruskin, who opened a china shop in the 1950s, Cumbow bought pottery blanks, both American and English, for the purposes of decorating them. Mabel was the decorator and produced many beautifully painted wares. Cumbow decorated a range of pieces from cups and saucers and creamers and sugars to miniature pitchers such as this one.

Among the best known Cumbow decorated items are Tea Leaf, which has passed muster with dedicated Tea Leaf china collectors in Tea Leaf International (Mabel Ruskin registered the Tea Leaf motif with the U.S. Patent Office) and the Sugar Pine Ridge Log Cabin Design, which appears on a number of sizes and shapes of items and a number of glazes, including luster and gold.

A recent book by Richard Foil details the history of Cumbow China.

This pitcher is decorated with a red and green sprigged pattern on a pink and cream background. The pink color extends inside the top and around the bottom. It is 3 3/4 inches high and 4 1/4 inches from the edge of the lip to the end of the handle. It is 3 1/4 inches wide with a 2-inch base. It is unmarked.

The pitcher is in excellent condition although the glaze shows some crazing with age.
