Rare Nevada Territory coal mining stock for property without much coal! Eldorado Canon, Ormsby County (printed at left). Inc. March 8th, 1864. No. 38, issued for five shares to A. Dubois on March 26th, 1864 in Virginia, N.T. Signed by president W. H. Rhodes and secretary H. Huguet. Not cancelled. Black border and print on green background. Two allegorical vignettes. Fancy title. Enterprise Print (covered by stamp). Mark Twain would have been working at the Territorial Enterprise at this time. One 20 and one 5 cent revenue stamps attached on the left. Pinholes, folds, wear to edges. Located in Eldorado Canyon. One man wrote in the Virginia Evening Bulletin of April 7, 1864, that he took some coal samples and “…neither in composition, origin or properties, has any affinity to coal.” Eldorado Canyon is in the Pine Nut Mountains between Carson City and Silver City or Dayton. Coal mining was done in this canyon as early as the early 1860's. ["Nevada Heartland" by Ansari] Secretary Huquet was proprietor of the Mariposa Quartz Mill. The Carson Appeal once described Rhodes as one of the most prominent disloyalists on the Pacific Coast.
