(Cuban Slavery) Collection of 4 ALsS, 1 Autograph Manuscrpit (unsigned), and 1 Manuscript Map relating to a slave uprising in Matanzas, Cuba, 8pp, 1822-25, to the Matanzas merchant Edward Spalding, excellent content re the tense situation in Cuba at this time, with Great Britain pressuring for the abolishment of the slave trade, and slave revolts beginning to occur with some frequency. Reads in part, "...I should not be surprised...if the Government [Great Britain] should send a large force...and demand satisfaction from the Governor...Do not oblige yourself to stay in that island as the time will come when they must be agitated by revolutions and trouble...I had received information of the revolt...The whole of the white men in our district were immediately under arms...measures taken as to prevent any communication with the insurgents, and men were sent off to assist in quelling them...they are now at the mercy of the whites. Fears were entertained by the people of Camarisca for my Negroes, but I had no reason to suspect them. When they heard of the movement many of them were heard to say that those Negroes were fools and would be killed by the Spaniards...a lesson to teach others...these savages may be roused to such ruthless deeds...I am in want of six brass Blunderbusses..." The manuscript and map, written in an unknown hand, apparently record the number of persons killed at a town or plantation called "San Jose", during the 1825 slave rebellion. VG. Interesting. $750-1,000
