Crystalline Copper Group
CRYSTALLINE COPPER GROUP
Onganja, Seeies, Namibia
This specimen is a free-standing group of octahedral copper crystal from the inactive Ongangja Mine. When this specimen was mined back in the 1970's the Ongangja Mine was in full production of great quantities of copper. A number of fine native copper specimens associated with enormous cuprite crystals were produced. This example is entirely consistent with other material mined during that period. The branches of the group spread in three dimension with little or no mechanical constraints imposed by the surrounding rock. The crystal habit is one of elongated octahedrons arranged in dendritic fashion. The patina runs from a bright 'new copper' hue to the color of antique leather achieved after decades of exposure to the atmosphere. The group measures 3 ½ inches tall by 3 ¾ inches wide by 1 5/8 inches in thickness. Associated with the group is a small amount of calcite. There is no damage.
