In 1858, at 3 years of age, Herman J. Thyes moved from his New Jersey birthplace to the West with his parents for the California Gold Rush [Ref: Nevada History Through Glass, Vol 1, Fred Holabird, p. 249]. In January of 1880, Thyes advertised that he was gathering supplies to open a new saloon in Reno, which he opened on the west side of Virginia Street with his business partner C.C. Chase. By 1888, Thyes was senior partner and had taken on a junior partner, Mr. Chamberlain, and together they renamed the saloon “the Crystal Saloon.” In 1891 Thyes bought out Chamberlain’s share in the business and thus became the sole proprietor. He later retired in 1916. This bottle is extremely rare, with perhaps only two others known. This seltzer stands 11.5” tall, with top, on a 4”wide footed base. Clear glass, small dings in foot, very good condition. Metal top is engraved “Sam the Seltzer Man”. Siphon tube intact. - Jacobitz Collection -59844
