Crudely manufactured Officer’s sword and leather scabbard approx. 36” overall with 29-1/2” blade in overall fair + condition. The blade measures 1” across which is thinner than the usual Civil War period Union Officer’s production sword, there is a partial blood groove and etched panels on both sides of the blade that appear original including “C.S.A.” on the left side. The grip and pommel are crudely brass cast and the wood grip is wrapped in worn leather and has a solid wire wrap all of which appears very old and matches the condition of the rest of this weapon. The scabbard is unmarked and worn with crazing, cracks and old flaking to leather, heavy patina to brass mounts. As serious collectors know, Confederate attributed blades are some of the most sought after artifacts but also are the most misidentified. This sword has a really believable appearance and comes from the estate of a serious student and collector of Civil War materials. Buyer must however, make his or her own determination as to the manufacturer of this interesting piece. From the Richard Wolfe Collection. Est.: $2,500-$5,000.
