This is a Cruchon & Emons compass made in Berne. Made about 1917 and carried into battle by "L.M. Allen of the 42nd division of Infantry, Co. D 16th Infantry" the "Rainbow" company followed by a light scribe in the shape of a rainbow at the bottom. All lightly scribed on the back of the compass. S/N 53230 on the case. Great patina on the outer case and still accurate
with light spotting on the lens. The Rainbow Division was composed of Army National Guardsmen from many states, hence the term rainbow, which reflected the diversity of Americans. The 42nd Division suffered significant losses, with over 14,000 casualties including 2,950 KIA. They fought in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and later occupied Germany. 2 in. diameter. Please see photo for details.
