This very interesting painting was painted in 1907 at the Magdelena-Vieja, about 3 miles West of Lima, Peru. It depicts on of the shrines found throughout South America known as Cruce de Mayo, so called because of the custom of changing the draperies on the arms of the cross in the first week of May. The white dot at the foot of the cross is a skull. It was apparently fairly commonplace to find skulls, and it was customary to place them at the foot of the cross. The hole at the bottom was to burn candles. The gibbet to the left of the cross was for hanging a lantern at night. This information is taken from the typed page affixed to the verso and signed by the artist. Unfortunately, I cannot make out the name of the artist. The painting is on a wooden board with beveled edges in the back. It has been cleaned of surface dirt, but otherwise untouched. The size is 18" by 11". It is in fine condition. There is a slight bow in the board.
