Crow Young Warrior's Beadwork Shirt
The lot features a young warrior’s beadwork hide shirt attributed to the Crow Native American Indians of the Northern Plains region. The shirt is comprised of Indian brain-tanned buckskin hide with fringe cuts, two beaded triangular bibs, old red-white heart beads and large mescal beads. The piece has two beaded rings around the shoulders and long sections of darkened fringes hanging down from each shoulder in typical fashion. The bottom edge of the shirt, along the cuffs, at the elbows, shoulders and framing the beadwork is hand cut frilly hide fringe ranging from long to short. The shirt itself has a fabric piped collar edge which is trade thread sewn. The shirt has some dirt wear, stains and a few holes from use. The beaded triangle sections have a dark black to blue ocher mineral dyed finish with red white heart beaded and hide fringes. The shirt has the pattern and stylings of a circa 1875 example, with the consignor finding it of that age as well, with the exact age and origin of the piece being unknown or undetermined, please example the piece for your own representation. Provenance: From the Cyrus Eaton collection of London, England. Measures overall 24 inches in length and 20 inches across the shoulders not including the arms.
