Crow Quilled & Beaded Pinwheel Moccasins c. 1900-
The lot features a set of men’s moccasins from the Crow Native American Indians of Montana dating to early 1900’s showing a quilled and beaded pinwheel pattern. The set shows Indian tanned Great American Bison Buffalo hide with medium ankle showing red stroud piped edge and hide soles with slightly hardened footprint patina from much age and use. The tops show an iconic pinwheel or sun pattern in porcupine quillwork with natural pigment ocher dyes of blue, red and natural cream with a red stroud old trade clothe dot center being bordered in red white heart seed trade early beads. The pinwheel shows fifteen arms with each having a ribbon or flag flying from the tip. The ankle shows a fancy edge in glass pony trade beads, scalloped hide tongue and original hide tie straps. The moccasins are both trade thread and sinew sewn and show some slight loss to the quills and beadwork and some seams opening. Provenance: From a large collection of American Indian beadwork in Billings, Montana where the set was found to be an original authentic example. Each measures 11.5”L soles by 4 7/8”W by 4”H ankle.
