Crow Beaded Parfleche Painted Lance & Sword Case
The lot features a beautiful, colorful and large parfleche lance case or sword case with a old style saber sword in Crow pattern. The vintage lance case shows thick sections of parfleche rawhide Buffalo Bison hide sewn together with hide lacing and has ted stroud clothe, glass trade seed beads and silver conchos. The triangle and linear shapes are done in “scratch etching” incised classic old style by using the edge of sharp knife and scratching into the surface of the parfleched hide. This is a true work of art that displays beautifully done in old Crow style of Montana with pastel colors and geometric pattern. There are two hanging taps which are comprised of trade clothe, wool stroud and beadwork with nickel metal concho tabs having long fringes at the bottom. Front of the tabs have cross symbols and the back has triangle symbols with colors of Cheyenne pink, light blue, dark blue, red white, yellow and lilac white hearts. The head is completely covered in glass trade seed beadwork with snake like pattern having colors of white, yellow, dark blue medium green, Cheyenne pink, faint greasy yellow, Cheyenne pink white heart and others. The bottom has long twisted hide fringes having tan and red wrapped yarn with wound glass chalk white beads in between and at the top long frilly hide fringes as well. Back of the triangle has red clothe covering and the incised and polychrome painted parfleche sheath is shown on both sides. The sheath or case is accompanied with a vintage late-20th Century Civil War style cavalry saber for example and display. This piece is similar in design to the Chandler Pohrt example and displays wonderfully. From the Dean Taylor and Ted Levy collections. Measures overall without fringes and with sword 50.5”L by 8.5”W.
