Lithography by Western Bank Note and Engraving of Chicago. Issued by the Crosby Opera House Art Association, 1866. Reverse stamped "engraving delivered." Serial # 208715. 4 x 2 inches. AU-CU condition. Crosby's Opera House was a five story building designed by William W. Boyington. Facing financial difficulties, the Art Association was formed to sell the building by lottery. Distributing over 210,000 of tickets like this one, purchasers won great works of art and even the building itself. A. H. Lee won the building and sold it back to Uranus H. Crosby, the founder. The building was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and never rebuilt.
