Cromwell Proof Sixpence by Tanner, 1658. Plain edge. Extremely rare (similar to the Simon-engraved sixpence listed as S-3229 but these issues are not listed in the Spink standard catalogue). Created in 1738 by mint engraver J.S. Tanner (who thereby unwittingly gave this denomination its popular nickname) using Thomas Simon's punches and dies for the original sixpence, which is so rare it is almost never seen (the fabulous Norweb Collection owned an example grading just Fine). The Cromwell sixpence was even ultra-rare in 1738! Tanner seems to have been answering a demand from contemporary collectors. Today, Simon's sixpence is hands-down the rarest coin of Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector following England's Civil War. The present specimen by Tanner is among the finest known, a Choice Proof with rich, dark-gray original toning. Perfectly struck on an excellent silver flan, showing tiny dots of die-rust. Almost every collector in the world needs a Cromwell sixpence, and here is a wonderful specimen!

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
