Portrait of James H. Crockwell on white border RPC. Contrast is medium, while focus is good. "JH Crockwell, Salt Lake City, Utah, Born March 21st-1855" hand-written in pen and "Early Photographer of Utah" printed in pencil on reverse. Crockwell was indeed born on the date listed in Woodbury, Iowa. He learned photography from C.W. Carter in Salt Lake City in 1883. He was billed as a traveling photographer specializing in mining views in Utah and Nevada with a studio at 337 G Street, Salt Lake City, c.1886. Studio in Virginia City, Nevada, at 29 1/2 C Street, 1888. Published a book of photographs of Nevada mining towns and activity, Souvenir of the Comstock. Partner with Marston, c.1891".
