Critters 2 Puppet
Sometimes the star of a movie (or a series of movies) is not the actor, writer, or director, but the special effects geniuses who create the image that sticks with us long after the popcorn runs out. And in the case of the “Critters” franchise (“Critters” 1986, “Critters 2” 1988, “Critters 3” 1991 and “Critters 4” 1992) this is due to the work of the Chiodo Brothers (Charles, Edward and Stephen), who designed, built, and “ran” those loveable creatures from outer space. Creatures with a veracious appetite, especially for the sweet meat of simple folk like you and I! This is a full size screen used actual Critter, known as a puppet prop from “Critters 2”. In this second installment, it’s the citizens of Gover’s Bend (perhaps a homage to the equally alien invaded Grove’s Mill from Orson Wells brilliant and panic producing radio play of “War of the Worlds” on October 30th, 1938) who end up face-to-fangs with the Critters when a bunch of Critter eggs are mistaken for Easter eggs. And you know what's going to happen when they hatch! This is an amazing piece of Hollywood memorabilia, so instantly recognizable, even after all these years, what with its fur, sharp teeth set in a permanent wicked “smile”, beady eyes and claw-like hands. It is made of foam latex and fur, and the arms and legs are made to move. This real “live” Critter was obtained by Chiodo Brothers Production mechanics supervisor Dwight Roberts who worked on the film. A solid piece, in good shape, and it even comes with extra Critter Parts. (Critter is approx 14x7x10)
