Critters 2 Morphing Head
It’s interesting to see how film keeps going back to the basics when it comes to special effects. In the beginning, most effect were mechanical, or what they call “on the floor”. Then “in film” effects took over. But with the genius of such innovators as Stan Winston and Rob Bottin, audiences were once again terrified out of their seats by effects that were “live”, and gave the effects unbelievable realism which, with their talents, and those of other artists inspired by them, gave us the likes of the amazing real time transformations such as William Hurt’s in “Altered States” ((1980), Jeff Goldblum in “The Fly” (1986), to all those people and dogs in John Carpenter’s “The Thing” (1982). Much of this technique used “balloon bladders” set under latex skin which allowed the frame of the body to shape-shift right before our eyes. We have an excellent example of this in this screen used morphing head from “Critters 2” (1988). This is fill size, made of foam latex, with balloon bladders inside to make the “skin” pulsate when air is blown threw long tubes. This unique special effects head was used in the scene where a faceless alien suddenly morphs before our eyes into a Critter. This massive head comes with a series of connected tubes that were used in the scene. The head also has a half-head of hair (for the phrase of the transformation). It is approx 13/9x11.
