Crete, Rhaukos. Silver Stater (10.63 g), ca. 320-300 BC
Poseidon standing right, holding trident and reins of horse standing behind him to right. Reverse: PA-Y-K-[ION] (retrograde), trident. Svoronos 13, pl. XXIX, 16. Old scratch in the obverse field, and despite the heavy wear, this is actually a fairly nice example of one of these. Fine. Little remains today of the ancient Cretan city of Rhaukos except a few pottery shards and some remains of walls. The city was destroyed by its neighbors, Gortyn and Knossos in 167/6 BC. All of Rhaukos' coinage dates from the Hellenistic period, and like on this coin, depicts Poseidon with a horse and a trident.
