Mearns wrote two influential books: Creative Youth 1925, and Creative Power 1929. Essayist Gabriel Gudding credits those books with "[lighting] a fuse" under the teaching of creative writing, influencing a generation of scholars.



Mearns is credited with the relatively well-known rhyme:



Yesterday upon the stair

I met a man who wasn't there.

He wasn't there again today

Oh how I wish he'd go away.



A version of the poem was used as the opening words in the 2003 movie "Identity":



As I was going up the stair

I met a man, who wasn't there

He wasn't there again today

I wish, I wish he'd go away.



The poem has also been used in several other films, including "Velvet Goldmine" in 1998 and "Being Cyrus" in 2006.


Another version is quoted in the Star Trek novel Q-Squared:



I thought I saw upon the stairs

A little man who wasn't there

He wasn't there again today

Oh how I wish he'd go away



This poem inspired David Bowie to write "The Man Who Sold the World" which was recorded by Kurt Cobain and Nirvana.
