Cousteau, Jacques-Yves. THE SILENT WORLD. A STORY OF UNDERSEA DISCOVERY AND ADVENTURE, BY THE FIRST MEN TO SWIM AT RECORD DEPTHS WITH THE FREEDOM OF FISH. Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York. 1953. 8vo. xiv, 266, (6) pages. Original orange over blue cloth, lettered in black, protected jacket. Inscribed to Henry Weldon by the author. Historic diving photos in b&w and color. Jacket edges worn and chipped, Near Very Good. cover edges worn, Very Good. Cousteau and Emile Gagnan designed, built, and tested the first 'aqualung' in the summer of 1943, off the southern coast of France. In the opening chapters of the book, Cousteau recounts the earliest days of scuba diving with his diving companions Frederic Dumas and Philippe Tailliez. The aqualung allowed for the first time untethered, free-floating extended deep-water diving, and ushered in the modern era of scuba diving. Later chapters include excursions diving to shipwrecks. This book was the basis of the Academy Award-winning documentary The Silent World (1956). It contains 48 pages of black-and-white photos by various photographers, and 16 pages of color photos, made available by National Geographic Magazine. The hand-held work in Ektachrome 'is the first ever made in significant depths, using artificial light and scientific color correction'. A rare early signature. In the inscription to Weldon, Cousteau mentions his son Philippe-Pierre, who would tragically perish in a plane crash 26 years after the penning of this note. Lot weight: 1 lbs 8oz. Subject(s): Diving History.
