Image is of Clark Terry of the Count Basie Orchestra with a table of fans and new friends at the Brass Rail Theater Lounge in Chicago in 1950. He inscribed a message and signed the photo. Clark Terry (1920–2015) was a pioneering American jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player. Born in St. Louis, he rose to prominence playing with the Count Basie Orchestra (1948–1951) and later the Duke Ellington Orchestra (1951–1959). In 1960 he became the first Black staff musician on NBC’s The Tonight Show band. Renowned for his warm tone, improvisational skill, and mentorship of younger musicians such as Quincy Jones, Terry remained an influential performer and educator throughout his career.
