Cottonwood manuscript cancel
The Cottonwood post office was instituted on March 6, 1878. This manuscript cancel (see photo) is probably from 1888. Sent from Lewis A. Willard, one of the best known citizens of Northern Arizona, and a pioneer resident of the Verde Valley. His son Wallace was born in August 14, 1869 which helps confirm the date of the letter. He served as a Rough Rider in the Spanish American War, was a deputy sheriff, miner , and cowboy in the Cottonwood area.
