c1600s-A fascinating relic from the 17th century: A 37.5" long Spanish cup Hilt Rapier. The blade, worn with age, still shows quality workmanship, and the cup hilt is not severely dented, though it has rusted through in several areas. The handle is also rusted, the cloth or wood wrapping that once padded the metal core is now gone. There are no markings to indicate blacksmith or origin of production, though this piece is typical of c1600 era Spanish cup hilt rapiers. A fascinating piece that was found in a jungle in Costa Rica. Spanish explorers discovered what is now Costa Rica at the turn of the 16th century, when it was populated by several indigenous peoples whom Columbus and his crew soon usurped. HKA#64878
