This type of shoes belonged to the standard equipment of a cosmonaut and were used during the stay at the space station. The shoes were produced around 1990 and are made of black leather. They have white stitching and zippers. This pair of shoes was worn by the Soviet cosmonaut, Alexander Alexandrovich Volkov at the space station Mir in the year 1991. While he was spending time at the Mir, the Soviet Union fell apart. This simple pair of shoes is ideal for the stay in the absence of gravity and in the confined space of the station.

The shoes’ soles are signed by Volkov and are marked with the stamp of the Space Expedition Andora. The dimensions of each are 30 x 12 x 10 cm which corresponds to the shoe size of 43/44. They are in good condition with signs of wear. The sole of the right shoe shoes more visible traces of age and use. The insoles are missing.

Alexander Alexandrovich Volkov (b. 1948)

The Soviet cosmonaut Alexander A. Volkov is originally from the former union republic of Ukraine. He was trained and educated as cosmonaut in the years from 1976 to 1979. Volkov flew two times to the space station Mir where he stayed in 19988/1989 and 1991/92 and completed several outboard missions. During his second stay of the space station Mir, he experienced the end of the USSR. While entering the space station as a Soviet Union citizen, he left it already as a Russian state resident.
