American writer (1903–1968) who is best known for his crime fiction; his story It Had to Be Murder served as the source for Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Rear Window. ALS, three pages on two sheets, 6 x 9, Hotel Marseilles letterhead, February 7, 1942. Handwritten letter to literary agent H. N. Swanson, in part: "'Dime a Dance' was sold by me in December, unfortunately. Wish I had heard from you sooner. What I am chiefly interested in right now is: I have a book here that will be finished in seven more days (Feb. 15th). I want it offered out there & I would like you to handle it, if you care to. It is not my regular Simon & Schuster book. That has already been turned into them ('Black Alibi'—April). They automatically send theirs out to Donald Friede to handle. The point is, this one I am completing will come out here under a pen-name, different firm, of course. I do not know whether you would prefer to send it around under the pen-name or my own. You are better qualified than I am to decide whether that matters, or there is such a thing as glutting the market. I feel it is a good book, & would not be interested in any modest figures." In fine condition, with multiple staple holes to the upper left corners.
