American businessman and philanthropist (1843–1899) who succeeded his father and grandfather as head of the New York Central Railroad. Partly-printed DS, signed “C. Vanderbilt,” one page, 12.75 x 9, December 1, 1881. Michigan Central Railroad bond for $5,000 issued to Charles H. Coutoit. Signed at the conclusion by Vanderbilt as vice president and countersigned by two other company officials. Expected cancellation stamps and holes (affecting all signatures), and a bit of surface loss to the left border, otherwise fine condition.
