Partly-printed DS, signed C. Vanderbilt" and "W. H. Vanderbilt, one page, 10 x 5, May 10, 1870. Stock certificate issued to Horace F. Clarke for one share in the Spuyten Duyvil and Port Morris Railroad, signed at the conclusion by William Henry Vanderbilt as the company's president, and endorsed along the left edge by Cornelius Vanderbilt II. Handsomely mounted, matted, and framed with portraits to an overall size of 18.5 x 19.5. In fine condition. Built in what is today the West Bronx and South Bronx in New York City, the Spuyten Duyvil and Port Morris Railroad ran from the junction between the West Side Line and the Hudson River Railroad near Spuyten Duyvil Creek, then along the Harlem River to the northwestern shore of the East River. William H. Vanderbilt (1821-1885) was an American railroad executive and philanthropist who was heir to the fortune of his father, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. William's son, Cornelius Vanderbilt II (1843-1899), succeeded his father and grandfather as head of the New York Central Railroad.
