Cornelius Vanderbilt Autograph Letter Introduci Cornelius Vanderbilt
Cornelius Vanderbilt Autograph Letter Introducing a Railroad Crony as "Reliable." Autograph Letter Signed "C. Vanderbilt" 1 page, 5" by 8.25", New York, September 21, 1863. Some discoloration at fold and along top margin, but not unsightly; a faint pencil notation at bottom of blank portion of letter; and tipped, by integral leaf, to a piece of cardboard: quite good, in all. Terse, as if he were paying by the word, the second wealthiest man in American history makes his point: "Allow me to introduce my friend James H. Banker. I wish him to make your acquaintance. He is reliable." Vanderbilt was busy in 1863 buying up railroads -- as if at almost 70, shipping hadn't made him rich enough. With his election that year as President of the New York & Harlem Railroad, the Commodore put James H. Banker on the Board. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
