Railroad executive and shipbuilder who was instrumental in developing ironclad ships for the Union Navy (1829–1896). Civil War–dated ALS signed “C. S. Bushnell,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 9.75, New London and Stonington Railroad Company letterhead, July 3, 1861. Letter of recommendation. In part: “A number of our prominent businessmen are very desirous to secure the appointment of Mr. Charles Root as Counsel to Jamaica.” Intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), and some small areas of toning, otherwise fine condition.
