Lake St. Charles is frequently featured in the paintings of the artist. Krieghoff moved to Quebec City in 1853, and the following decade was a happy and productive time. Lake St. Charles, situated 13 km north of Quebec City, was a favourite hunting and fishing area, and was also well-frequented by families. Thus, it provided idyllic imagery to the artist, who loved to paint the local people engaged in their activities and the scenery. This painting depicts Major F. Robinson of the Scots Guard, in his distinctive white hat, canoeing on the lake.
