Cornelis Jacobsz. Delff (Delft 1571 - 1643) Culinary Still Life, w/ fruit, copper- and pottery dishes, and ribs, upper left signed CJDelff (ligature), oil on wood, 76,5 x 126 cm, w/ frame (Wo).€ 60.000 - 80.000 US $ 59.400 - 79.200 Cornelis Jacobsz. Delff, one of the earliest Dutch still life painters in the modern sense, was presumably trained by his father Jacob Willemsz. Delff the Elder. The few paintings that have been definitely identified as his work are all undated. The present painting, one of the artist's main works, illustrates various facets of his compositional- and painterly technique; such as balanced arrangement, juxtaposition of different materials, and contrasting lighting effects. The reflecting surfaces of copper pots and bronze vessels reappear in many of his kitchen pieces. In his choice of subject, Delff continues the tradition of Pieter Aertsen and Beuckelaer, though his still lifes are marked by their profane nature and a near unreal spatial perspective. The works can also be compared to the still lifes of Floris van Schooten.
