In this lithograph in colors a reclining female nude with a bird in a landscape is shown in rich, bright colors. In this work Corneille has abandon the expressive attitude of the early years. The composition is calm and clear. The typical symbols of his later visual language as the woman and the bird are to be found. The influence of his travels to exotic countries and dealing with primitive art is clearly visible.

The lithograph in colors is numbered, signed and dated upper left in pencil ‘130/150 Corneille 85’. Along the edges the colors are insignificantly discolored due to mounting. The sheet is mounted in a mat at the reverse lower sheet edge with adhesive tape. Otherwise the condition is very good. The glass of the frame is broken in one corner, the frame indicates slight signs of wear. The image is printed to the edges and measures 55.6 x 75.8 cm. The framed dimensions are 70.5 x 90.7 cm

Corneille, born Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922-2010)

Corneille studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the Netherlands. He had his first solo exhibition in 1946. One year later he joined the artist movement ‘Reflex’, together with Karel Appel and Constant Nieuwenhuys, followed by the founding of the CoBrA group in Paris only one year later. In 1949 Corneille travelled through many exotic countries, showing the influence in his work. He later finally settled in Paris, where he lived and worked until his death in 1950.
