Vintage sepia matte-finish 7.5 x 11 Harris & Ewing portrait of Hull in a half-length pose, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen, "To Hon. Laurence A. Steinhardt—with high esteem—Cordell Hull, Oct. 1938.” In very fine condition, with a small crease to the lower left corner tip.

Laurence Adolph Steinhardt was an American economist, lawyer, and senior United States Department of State diplomat (born 1892) who served as a U.S. Ambassador to six countries—Sweden, Peru, the Soviet Union, Turkey, Czechoslovakia, and Canada. He was killed in a U.S. embassy plane crash on March 28, 1950, making him the first United States Ambassador to be killed in the line of duty.
