Copperhead Collection. A splendid collection
Copperhead Collection. A splendid collection of six items relating to the Copperhead movement: 1) Pamphlet, "Copperhead Conspiracy in the North-west - An Exposé of the Treasonable Order of the 'Sons of Liberty,' Vallandigham, Supreme Commander," 5 1/2 x 8 3/4 , 8 pp. "...Secret, oath-bound, treasonable associations throughout the Northern States...Declares a law of races, one of Caucasian supremacy, and one of African servitude...." Description of the rituals, operations, and personnel of the Copperheads, a.k.a. Knights of the Golden Circle. Some dust toning, else very good. 2) Rare propaganda handbill ridiculing the "K.G.C. Steamer Copperhead" and deportation of Copperhead Congressman Vallandigham from the Confederacy. 3 x 5 1/2 . Old mounting trace, else excellent. 3) Cream envelope boldly free-franked by Vallandigham as M.C. and addressed in his hand, postmarked Washington, Feb.(?) 23. Fine. 4) Sprawling signature on white card, "C.L. Vallandigham, Dayton, Ohio," remarkably dated Nov. 25, 1864 the day the Northern Confederacy rose in a series of some thirteen home-grown terrorist attacks on New York City. Next to the days that Sumter was attacked and Lincoln died, it was one of the most shocking days of the nineteenth century in America. Fine. 5) Carte photo of Vallandigham. Some fingerprint toning, else very good, and seldom seen. 6) Dramatic Union patriotic envelope with enormous letters in red and blue outline, "K.G.C.," with skull and crossbones, the "Grand Seal of the K.G.C." Printed by Car Bell, Hartford. Very good. Vallandigham was imprisoned by Gen. Burnside for his speeches, then banished by Lincoln to the Confederacy. Upon objecting to Davis' handling of the war, he was summarily ejected from the South as well. Going through the blockade to Nassau, he lived in Canada until June 1864, when he returned to the U.S. and delivered the keynote speech at the Democratic Convention. Vallandigham is regarded as the model for Edward Everett Hale's "Man Without a Country."
