This parinirvana stupa was crafted from copper in 19th / early 20th century Tibet. The word parinirvana translates ‘total termination’ and means complete nirvana. This stupa served as a reliquary casket and is closed with a double vajra symbol on the bottom place. The round lower platform is decorated with lotus leaves in relief, whilst the area above has the form of a bell, adorned with floral, chased tendrils. The middle part creates a square platform with angular edges and the grooves of the section above it get narrower as they extend upwards. The top end of the stupa is adorned with a closed lotus bud above a circle of fanned out leaves. Seen from above, the stupa results in a mandala.
The Stupa is in good condition with only slights signs of age and wear. Minimal loss of material to one of the side peaks as well as minor scratches and nicks are visible. The Dimensions are 26.5 x 11 cm (diameter x width).
Stupa
The stupa is deemed one of the earliest and most important Buddhist structures and is viewed as being a symbol of Buddha and dharma. In Sanskrit, the word stup means “to heap up or accumulate”. Originally, this was used to denote semi-spherical mounds out of soil or stone, in which the remains of the dead were kept. The semi-sphere symbolized completeness and was used as an emblem for the universe. The stupa consists for the most part of a square-shaped platform, from which a dome with a tip extends.
