Lot of 2. 1. Copper ingot recovered from the 1865 sinking of the SS Pewabic on Lake Huron. 9.5x3x2.27", 14.8 lbs. Three heels and two valleys. Stamped "LTS" marked on second heel, Lake Superior Transit Co.. "PW" Pewabic, marked on first heel and "MG" mining co. on third heel. August of 1865 the Pewabic was headed South from Lake Superior with 267-350 tons of copper, possibly 125 passengers and rumored to have gold and jewelry in the safe. Her sister ship Meteor was traveling North. As they approached each other and just 20 ft. apart the Pewabic turned across the Meteor bow. and was cut in half sinking in minutes. Pewabic sank into 160 ft. of water. Meteor stayed and rescued those in the water. Deaths vary approx. 70 passengers. The first attempt to recover the copper was 1865 by Billy Pike who died during the dive. Another attempt was in 1898 when the diving bell exploded killing the diver and his backer. 1970 another salvage was attempted and most of the copper was recovered but there was no other monies as rumored to be found. These initial dives earned the ship the nickname 'The Death Ship". A video "Pewabic- The Death Ship Of Lake Huron" is included with this lot.
