Copete Mining Company Stock
Issued in 1906 to Ethel E. Hunter for 10 shares at $5 each at New York. Signed by Hollister Logan as vice president and Myra B. Martin as secretary. Mines and Works at El Copete, Sonora, Mexico printed at the top of the certificate. The company’s only asset was the entire stock issue of the Melezer Mining Company which held title to the Copete lands. Lawsuits ensued when the company did not deliver on it’s promises to put money into the property and put it on a dividend paying basis. Myra B. Martin was described by the Copper Handbook as a “notorious petticoat grafter” along with the late “General” Walter S. Logan, an “equally notorious grafter of the other sex, now dead”. Apparantly, the company officers stripped the company of it’s assets. The Copper Handbook further opined “ that the company promoters, except Logan, who is dead, should be punished for their frauds”. The certificate is uncancelled. EF.
