French translation from the original English by Suard. Complete copy, the five volumes contain a total of 52 copperplates (27 folding), 15 copperplate maps (10 folding) and 2 folding tables. Highly detailed account written by Cook himself with additions by Georg Forster (these are in parenthesis). This was his second journey of the three (between 12 July 1772 and 30 July 1775), but historically this was the most significant. During this journey Cook tried to get to the most south towards the Antarctica. On the Pacific Ocean he once again visited New Zealand, discovered several new islands, including the New Hebrides, South Sandwich Islands, New Caledonia, Norfolk Islands, South Georgia and Tonga. The beautiful copperplate illustrations were made by William Hodges. Contemporary leather binding, ornately gilt spine (minor damages on the top of the spines), painted page edges. Fine and clean copy.
