Text vols bound in late 19th - early 20th century quarter calf, & marbled boards, spines gilt decorated, raised bands and vellum corners. Some very light offsetting from plates, but a very nice, large copy, completely uncut! Atlas volume bound in matching quarter calf & marbled boards, vellum corners plate 56 with old paper repair not effecting image. The occasional light marginal mark or age soil, one plate with marginal piece renewed Overall a very nice set. (4)

Beddie 1543; Hill I p.61-2. Cook's third voyage on which he made his most important discovery, the Sandwich Islands. Sent out to turn over Omai to Tahiti and seek a NW Passage, Cook discovered the Christmas and Hawaiian Islands then continued on to the NW coast of America, where he surveyed from northern California through the Bering Strai tto as far north as latitude 70º 44'. Returning to the Sandwich Islands for the winter Cook was killed in a skirmish with the natives. See colour illustration.
