Conversing with the Confederates. Union
Conversing with the Confederates. Union soldier's letter, 1864, near Petersburg, Va., discussing the coming Presidential elections. "...The way to crush the rebellion, the people must use just as much exertion to unite heart & hand to put down this rebellion, or otherwise it will give in favor of Jeff Davis...Some of our pickets & some of the Rebel's pickets both get water out of the one well & converse together...& trade tobacco for coffee...Not a shot is fired at each other...If they would leave it to the privates on both sides to settle this war, I think they would go it." Only pp. 5-6 of letter present, but still poignant content. About fine.
