Continental Mid-19th Century Percussion Miquelet Fowler, from the Eibar region of Spain, and dated 1844, bore measures .64, barrel length approx. 41-1/2'', adorned with light silver inlay; top flat marked ''Herradura'', right side flat marked ''En Eibar'', left side flat marked ''Ano 1844'', with light scrolls and applied animal scenes. Five Spanish proofmarks at breech show residual gold foil. Lightly scroll engraved Miquelet lock features integrate pierced dog's head and body hammer. Carved checkered fine Mediterranean walnut halfstock with serpent head pistol grip, and scroll and floret cheekpiece. Steel buttplate with trap. Condition is near fine with moderate even patination to exposed portion of barrel, which could either be cleaned or left alone. Lockplate and hammer details remain mostly clean and bright, with good crisp definition to all mechanical edges and surfaces. Checks show mild flattening, more pronounced at forend. Stock with fractures to both edges of forend tip. Good crisp action, bore is fair. No doubt owned by a successful merchant or land owner. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)
