Continental Currency May 10, 1775 $30 Choice About New. This is an unusually nice example. The signatures are strong, as is the serial number, the margins are exceptional, and all three vignettes are clean and clear. This $30 denomination has two vignettes on the back instead of the nature print common to the other denominations. The vignette on the left shows a strong wind roiling the sea, with the Latin legend "VI CONTITATE," which Newman translates as "Driven by Force." The motto to its right shows two sailing ships on a calm sea under the beaming sun. The Latin motto surrounding that vignette is, "CESSANTE VENTO CONQUIESCEMUS," which Newman translates as, "When the storm dies down, we will rest." Newman illustrates Ben Franklin's original handwritten sketch and idea for these vignettes on page 74 of his Fourth Edition The Early Paper Money of America.
