Continental Congress President Elias Boudinot Document Signed. Two pages, 6.5" x 8.25", [New Jersey], July 25, 1808. A legal financial document regarding a loan office certificate, signed at close. Boudinot was President of the Continental Congress for the November 1782 to November 1783 term. Since this was the period that the Treaty of Paris, in which Britain recognized American independence, was concluded, many misguided "historians" claim that he (or his predecessor John Hanson) was actually the first U.S. President. That notwithstanding, Boudinot served his country well: he was elected to the first three Congresses representing his beloved home state of New Jersey. Afterwards, George Washington appointed him Director of the United States Mint, a position he held until his retirement in 1805 and under whom the first U.S. coins were minted. He also served (for nearly 50 years) as a trustee of the College of New Jersey (Princeton), and later in life, he co-founded the American Bible Society. Fine condition; one small paper mend, hinged to larger sheet. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
