This is a Brooks flintlock presentation rifle presented to USMC General Lewis W. Walt by the National Rifle Association of America in 1980. The octagon barrel has engraved geometric accents around the fixed German silver blade front and notch rear sights with the accents extended to the breech and engraved barrel tang. The top, upper left, and upper right barrel flats feature a scroll engraved in the area between the breech and rear sight, with a German silver inlay signed "C.G. Brooks" on the top flat. The hammer and lock plate feature a scroll engraving with a zigzag line type accent on the lock plate, hammer, flash pan, frizzen, upper vise jaw, and cock spur. The trigger guard, ramrod pipes, ornate patch box, crescent buttplate, forend cap, side plate, and stock inlays are engraved German silver with the remaining metal surfaces bright. The buttplate, patch box, trigger guard, forend cap, and stock inlay on the underside of the forearm have a scroll engraving. The patch box has a presentation inscription: "PRESENTED TO / GENERAL LEWIS W WALT, USMC / BY THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA / AT THE 109TH ANNUAL MEMBERS BANQUET / 12 APRIL 1980". The rifle has an artfully shaped plain trigger. The nicely figured full length stock has four barrel wedges with engraved German silver escutcheons. Oval stock inlays are featured on top of the wrist and underside of the buttstock, with a star burst inlay on the cheekpiece. A German silver inlay compartment for the included bird head touch hole cleaning tool is present below the cheekpiece. The stock has carved accents on the flats with a scroll carving around the barrel tang and on the left side of the buttstock. Complete with an engraved silver tipped wooden ramrod. Comes with a generic foam lined carrying case, and engraved single round bullet mold marked "C.G. BROOKS", and two elaborately carved ivory swagger sticks. The swagger stick with a silver tip and floral engraved silver pommel cap features two raised stars on the grip area. The second swagger stick has an inscription: "GEN. LEWIS W. WALT, USMC / ACMC / 13 APRIL 1970 / PRESENTED BY / BRIG GEN LEE DONG YONG / CG, 2ND ROK MAR BDE". Lewis William Walt (February 16, 1913-March 26, 1989), also known as Lew Walt, was a United States Marine Corps officer who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His decorations included two Navy Crosses and two Distinguished Service Medals. He was a four-star general when he retired. During World War II, he led the attack on Aogiri Ridge during the Battle of Cape Gloucester (the ridge was renamed Walt's Ridge in his honor). He was in combat with the 1st Marine Division in Korea, serving consecutively as Commanding Officer, 5th Marines, Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3, and Chief of Staff of the Division. The Legion of Merit and Bronze Star, both with Combat "V", were awarded to him for exceptionally meritorious service during this assignment. The Republic of Korea government also awarded Gen. Walt with the Ulchi Medal and the Ulchi Medal with Silver Star for this period of combat. In 1965 Gen. Walt helped to initiate Combined Action Company (CAC) in South Vietnam. This program sent squads of Marine volunteers into the countryside to assist local part-time militia men known as Popular Forces in an attempt to deny the enemy a sanctuary at the local village level. The Vietnamese government awarded Gen. Walt the Vietnamese National Order, 3rd Class; the Vietnamese National Order, 4th Class; the Gallantry Cross with Palm; the Chuong My Medal, and the Vietnamese Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation of Gallantry Cross with Palm. Gen. Walt retired from active duty on February 1, 1971 and subsequently served as Director of the United States Marines Youth Foundation. He later coordinated a U.S. Senate investigation on international drug trafficking. In the mid-1970s General Walt served as the senior military member of President Gerald Ford's clemency board, and he later advised the Department of Defense on weapons development and combat training. He died on March 26, 1989 and is buried in Quantico National Cemetery.
