Constantius I, A.D. 305-306.
Constantius I, A.D. 305-306.<p>AR argenteus minted as Caesar at Rome, c. A.D. 294. Laureate head right of Constantius I/Four emperors (the Tetrarchy) sacrificing over tripod before gate in six-turrreted enclosure. RIC 22a [as R3]. AU55 ICG, with none of the usual deep flan cracks. Diocletian inaugurated a vast reform of the coinage, extending into all metals. The gold aureus was increased in weight, the AE follis was introduced and a new silver coin, the argenteus, was minted. Of good fineness and weight, unlike the now bronze antoninianus, the argenteus was a revival of the silver denarius at the time of Nero, struck 96 to the libra, or Roman pound, each coin weighing c. 3+ grams. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M.
