Constantine I, the Great, A.D. 307-337.
Constantine I, the Great, A.D. 307-337.<p>AV solidus as Augustus minted at Siscia, A.D. 335. Diademed, cuirassed and draped bust right of Constantine I/Victory seated right holding inscribed shield. 4.42 g. RIC 242. AU58 ICG, a few light marks in right field of reverse; rare. In A.D. 309 Constantine introduced the gold solidus, a denomination which was to be the standard gold coin for over 600 years. Our word "soldier" is derived from "solidus," coming from wages paid a Roman man-at-arms. It was struck in pure gold at 72 to the libra, or Roman pound. Later, the semissis (half solidus) and tremissis (third solidus) were minted. Siscia is now Sisak in Croatia. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M. Seventko.
