"Clayton Mining District, Contra Costa County" printed on certificate. Inc. June 1863. No. 141, issued for 25 shares to Henry Black in 1863. Signed by president WH Brown and secretary Currier. Not cancelled. Nice design with Loomis mining vignette, Native American vignette, and prospector vignette. 25 cent revenue stamp. Folds, hole along top border. 5.5 x 10" This is one of the earliest stock certificates from Clayton, Contra Costa County. The town was originally named Garibaldi after this prominent mine. Later it was renamed Clayton after English emigrant Joel Clayton.
