Conrad Veidt and Paul Ivano Signed Portraits
Conrad Veidt and Paul Ivano Signed Portraits. Horror aficionados will certainly appreciate this lot, which includes a 7" x 8.5" intense closeup portrait of actor Conrad Veidt (1893-1943) in a white costume wig, and an 8" x 11.5" portrait of cinematographer Paul Ivano. Veidt, of course, is legendary for his performances as Cesare in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Gwynplaine in The Man Who Laughs, as well as the Nazi Major Stasser in Casablanca; he was also a candidate for Dracula before Bela Lugosi claimed the film role. Ivano was a Hollywood cameraman for over 40 years, working on such films as Greed and Hell's Angels as well as filming the legendary Bela Lugosi test for Frankenstein. Veidt has signed in blue ink, and appears to have dramatized his signature by tracing over part of it in white ink as well. Ivano has signed in white ink, and thanks A. Gonzaga (of South America's "Cinearte" magazine) for the "bons moments a Rio de Janeiro," adding his signature and "Hollywood" beneath it. The Veidt picture has some creasing at the bottom not touching his image; the Ivano has some minor surface stains on his collar, a chip from the upper right border and some creasing at the bottom right corner where Ivano has written "Hollywood." Offbeat and highly unusual artifacts for the adventurous Vintage Horror collector!
