John Connolly came to America in 1870. He had learned saddle and harness making in County Down, Ireland. Connolly eventually moved to Minneapolis in 1885. John had three sons who also learned and mastered the art of saddleryand harness business. In 1907 the three Connolly sons John, Pat, and Andy moved to the West and opened a shop in Butte, Montana. In 1912 Jack and Pat moved to Billings, Montana and opened the second Connnolly shop.Because of their making background and the quality of their saddles, the Connolly’s became leaders in the saddle making industry. In the early 1900’s cowboy contestants wereriding all styles of saddles of the era. It was before the emergence of the Committee and later Association style saddles adopted by the beginnings of the PRCA. Contestant cowboys joined with saddle makers to buildsaddles that would emerge as the bronc saddle. Such was the Howard Tegland Rig, designed by Jack Connolly and Howard Tegland.
