Confederate period copy of a US model 1847 musketoon, .69 caliber, approx. 42” overall with 26-1/4” barrel. The gun shows plain brass mounts, simple construction, with no markings other than “134” stamped over the buttplate and “49” stamped on rear band. The lock is commandeered from a shotgun lock, the barrel shows a confederate type bolster, and a escutcheon has been inlayed into the wrist which is probably also pressed into service from another arm. The condition is fair with light to moderate scattered erosion and pitting, some slightly heavier pitting on a few areas of the lock, the nipple is missing. The stock only fair and show crude manufacture and a light coating of shellac or varnish. Murphy and Madaus’ book documents the use of shotgun locks and it is a well-known fact that every gunsmith and blacksmith was refitting usable arms and parts for confederate forces.
